The R8C family
With its short instruction cycles at 50ns (20MHz) and the
excellent code density, it is possible to use smaller Flash sizes,
which also helps to save cost. This combination of embedded
features, reduced code and high reliability offers developers a
microcontroller for more performance on 8-bit applications.
With its on-chip Flash memory from 4 to 128Kbyte and packages
from 20 to 100-pins this series has now over 300 devices in
production.
In addition to the wide range of peripheral and safety function,
new high performance features like the Data-Transfer-Control
(DTC) module – no need for CPU interfection - has been
implemented. By the middle of 2010 Renesas will introduce the
R8C/Mx devices to support low power applications with only
150uA/MHz.

Introduction
The R8C family
More performance on 8-bit applications
The R8C microcontroller family is the latest in a line of high-
performance microcontrollers from Renesas. At the beginning
of April 2003, we offered the first R8C devices, with the unique
innovation of the combination of a 16-bit core and 8-bit internal
bus to maximise performance and minimise cost. Firstly, we
introduced the R8C/1x devices in 20 & 32-pin packages with
memory sizes from 4 to 16kB Flash. With the 2nd R8C/2x
generation at the end of 2005, we added a high-speed 40MHz
on-chip oscillator, as well as new powerful features like motor
control timers, CAN, DA converter, RTC, and a Vcc power supply
reduced to 2.2V. Many other useful features were also added,
including low power modes down to 0.7µA in STOP mode and
1.8µA in WAIT mode.
Due to the excellent market reputation, well known reliability
and high quality, Renesas has continued to expand their product
line up by introducing the next 3rd generation of R8C/3x, R8C/
Lx (LCD) and R8C/3x ASSP groups. There are rising needs in the
increasingly popular green market, for power consumption for
devices and systems. With the latest R8C/Mx and R8C/Lx-SLP
Super Low Power devices these products complement the
roadmap. The internal architecure of the R8C/Lx has some
additional power switch to reduce current down to 20nA
and lower.
Due to the same core, all generations are SW compatible and
simplify emigrations.
