The ATCA-5000 and ATCA-5100 shelf peripheral modules (SPMs) provide an interface for ATCA
shelf management to various shelf peripherals and sensors. They also provide external
connections for the ATCA-defined Telco alarm connector and four isolated general-purpose
digital inputs to the shelf.
The ATCA-5000 and ATCA-5100 are designed to be plugged into the rear transition module
(RTM) area of the slots allocated for the ATCA-2100 or ATCA-2210 switch and control modules
(SCMs) in the shelf with the appropriate special connections.
Communication with the modules in the system is across a bused dual-channel I
2
C
Intelligent Platform Management Interface bus (IPMB).
The SPMs also provide additional I
2
C communication to the shelf display panel (SDP) and
to temperature sensors in the shelf.
In a properly configured system with two SPMs, one SPM can be hot-swapped without
affecting operation of the platform.
All of these buses and the other peripherals are connected to an Intelligent Platform
Management Controller (IPMC) that is controlled by a Renesas H8S/2168 Microcontroller.
As shown in Figure 1, Connections, on page 8, the SPMs connect to the shelf peripherals, IPMB,
and sensors through a nonstandard interface along the bottom of the RTM. They get power
from a dual 12-volt connection to the shelf in the nonstandard interface.
The ATCA-5000 connects to the ATCA-2100 through the Zone 3 connector area.
The ATCA-5000 and ATCA-5100 SPMs differ in the absence of the Zone 3 connector on the
ATCA-5100 (see Figure 1).
